Water Infrastructure


AQUA provides the full range of water engineering services for ski resort and mountain community systems, from initial source evaluation and master planning through detailed design of every facility type. Work spans simple pipeline replacements and fire flow improvements to complex multi-zone systems serving development across large elevation differentials.

Water systems in mountain resort settings require design approaches not typical of standard utility practice: extreme static pressure conditions, isolated source supplies with limited redundancy, highly variable seasonal demands, and strict drinking water regulatory requirements applied to non-standard infrastructure configurations. Wastewater Infrastructure

Snowmaking Supply Infrastructure


AQUA designs the primary snowmaking supply infrastructure that delivers raw water from source and storage to resort snowmaking systems: the reservoirs, pump stations, and transmission pipelines that sit upstream of the distribution network. This work requires engineering capabilities outside the range of standard civil practice. High-head hydraulic analysis, transient and surge design, large-scale pumping systems configured for seasonal mountain operation, and dam safety engineering are not incidental services on these projects. They define them.

AQUA works alongside snowmaking system designers and equipment vendors throughout design and construction. Primary supply infrastructure is sized, configured, and built to support operational requirements. System integration, vendor coordination, and constructability in active resort terrain are part of the design process, not afterthoughts addressed during construction.

Reservoirs and Dam Safety Engineering
Snowmaking reservoirs are commonly dam-regulated structures subject to state dam safety permitting requirements. AQUA manages the full engineering and regulatory process for new reservoir construction, existing reservoir modifications, and rehabilitation of aging reservoir infrastructure. Hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, embankment design, outlet structure design, and dam safety compliance documentation are handled in-house. Embankment work requires full-time on-site engineering observation and documentation that is separate from general construction oversight and is required for state regulatory closeout.

Primary Supply Pump Stations
Primary snowmaking pump stations operate under demanding conditions: high discharge pressures, large flow rates, seasonal operating cycles with extended idle periods, and tight integration with compressed air systems. Station design is developed in direct coordination with snowmaking equipment vendors on pump selection, packaged system interfaces, and equipment installation requirements. Structural design for cast-in-place concrete and prefabricated building configurations is handled in-house.

Transmission Pipelines and Hydraulic Analysis
Large-diameter raw water transmission pipelines in snowmaking systems regularly operate under static pressures that exceed the rated range of standard utility pipe materials. Welded steel and other high-pressure rated materials are common requirements rather than exceptions. Transient and surge conditions in high-head systems with large pump stations can be severe: surge analysis and mitigation design are integral to every primary supply system. Hydraulic modeling is performed for all primary supply system designs to verify pressure zones, flow distribution, and operating conditions across the range of snowmaking demands.

Design
Design services are structured to support both owner review and regulatory submittal. Phased submittals at 60, 90, and 100 percent completion allow resort ownership and regulatory agencies to review and comment before final document production. Construction documents are produced for competitive bidding and include technical specifications covering materials, installation requirements, and testing procedures appropriate to the facility type.
